Jedediah Sanger Bible
L-R: John Kazanjian, Town of New Hartford Supervisor; Kevin Miller, Donor; Jon Purdy, Village of New Hartford Trustee; Bob Dicker, President of New Hartford Historical Society.
A Holy Bible marked on the inside front cover “Jedediah Sanger”, was accessioned to the New Hartford Historical Society on June 1, 1989. The Gift Agreement is being signed by Kevin L. Miller who came across the Bible in a box of books which he purchased at an auction in Deansboro about seven years ago. Our fellow member Aletha Glass, a former neighbor of Kevin's, assisted in the research of this valuable acquisition.
Bob Dicker stated, "This Bible becomes one of the New Hartford Historical Society's most important possessions, right near the top along with a copy of the land deed to Jedediah Sanger from George Washington."
"We are sincerely grateful for Kevin's generous contribution. It displays the fine spirit which makes it possible for organizations such as ours to acquire important documents and artifacts to share with present and future generations."
Kevin said, "I am always looking and hoping I will find one of my family's Bibles or other documents as I am interested in doing my own family genealogy."
For several years the town has borrowed the book for swearing in ceremonies of town officials. The Society is happy to be a part of these important occasions.
The Bible is on display at the New Hartford Historical Society’s Museum at 2 Paris Road.
